The Legality of Self Defense

If you have an immanent question of self defense, seek legal counsel. If you are in immediate danger or feel threatened, contact the police.
The law allows individuals to defend themselves if attacked. In Florida, this right is codified in Florida Statutes, Chapter 776: Justifiable Use of Force.

A self-defense program is designed to raise awareness and ability to defend yourself, while also guiding you in staying inside the bounds of the law. The most basic thing to remember is that self defense is a last resort. Escape is the safest option. Moreover, escaping before fighting is codified within the statutes. If escape is possible, but you don't attempt it, you could be criminally charged.

Still, knowing self-defense is better than not. Awareness and calmness will help you exercise the best options first.
